The leather

Material

Leather is the main material used for our shoes. Find out how the tanneries we work with manufacture the leathers and how we choose them.

ANIMALS AND LEATHER

Leather comes from the skin of different animals: kip, calf, buffalo, goat, lamb, ostrich, snake, crocodile, lizard, pig and even skate, a fish which gives a pearl leather when tanned. The animals we often see in fields are not raised for their skins. Their skin is seen as a waste product from the slaughterhouse and is sold by the kilo to tanneries.

FROM SKIN TO LEATHER

Skin is turned into leather at tanneries. This transformation is called tanning. When the skins arrive, they are washed and the hair removed. Then they are tanned in fullers. This helps stabilise the fabric and prevent it from rotting. Once the skins are tanned, they are blue in colour and are called “wet blue” in the industry jargon.

Once rinsed and dried, the tanners inspect every detail and classify them in three categories, depending on the natural imperfections of the leather.

The leather is then dyed, washed and dried before being finished. It is then worked, to meet the characteristics defined by tbs in its specifications: firmness, softness, roundness or lightness.

NOBLE LEATHERS FOR TBS

At tbs, we mainly use full-grain kip leather. Our designers, who are leather connoisseurs, select the softest and thickest leathers for standard city shoes. That’s the secret for the legendary hard-wearing and lost-lasting edge of tbs shoes.

Because we have always wanted to offer you the same quality since 1978, we have carefully archived our leathers in our leather library. It is a source of inspiration for each new collection and most importantly a base for creating new leathers whilst maintaining our very high quality standards.

SELECTING PIECES THAT ADAPT TO THE SHAPE OF YOUR FOOT

In the tbs workshops, we know that a comfortable shoe is a shoe that adapts to your foot! This is why our leather cutters carefully pick the direction in which they cut the leather to ensure the shoe will adapt to the foot.
